At the final examination of the Department of Automotive Technologies at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), it quickly became clear this summer that the event was much more than a traditional assessment. Through the students\u2019 presentations and the reflections of industry representatives, it was evident: the next generation of engineers is not only well-prepared but also confident and credible in representing their knowledge.<\/strong>
Below, we share insights from three industry experts and a recent graduate \u2014 first-hand.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Andor Bauernhuber, examination board member<\/strong><\/p>\n

Materials Testing Engineer, Audi Hungaria Zrt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always interesting to see how young people respond to this situation,\u201d said Dr. Andor Bauernhuber, a returning board member, who often observes how nervous Hungarian students can be. \u201cInternational students, by contrast, tend to approach it more casually \u2014 as if they\u2019re preparing for a pleasant conversation. Yet, none of their lives are on the line \u2014 and it would help if everyone kept that in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

He believes the final exam is not just about knowledge but also about how that knowledge is presented. \u201cWhen someone gives a presentation, that\u2019s how they convince us they\u2019ve done the work and understand the topic. Preparation matters \u2014 but it\u2019s just another task. No need to overdramatize it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was impressed with this year\u2019s students: \u201cSeveral of them are people I\u2019d gladly work with. You can tell they understand what they\u2019re doing and know how to communicate their work effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

What matters most for future engineers, according to him, are language skills, curiosity, and diligence. \u201cTechnical knowledge can be learned. It\u2019s your attitude that determines whether you become a great engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n

G\u00e1bor Balogh, examination board member<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWell-prepared, high-quality presentations. I can only offer my congratulations,\u201d summarized G\u00e1bor Balogh, who particularly praised the Bosch-themed project and another on composite materials that aligned with his own interests. \u201cIt was clear that students had deeply engaged with their topics \u2014 and that the university is preparing them effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sees flexibility, openness, and continuous learning as essential qualities for engineers today. \u201cBME provides a strong foundation \u2014 but students must go beyond that. I advise them to keep an eye on global trends, not just the domestic industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

His advice for future candidates: \u201cKnow your topic inside out, be confident, and stand by your knowledge \u2014 even when asked tough questions. The board isn\u2019t trying to find flaws, but potential. And that\u2019s good to keep in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

R\u00f3bert Sik, examination board member<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great experience. I saw excellent presenters who knew their topics well and spoke with confidence,\u201d said R\u00f3bert Sik, who left the exam with a strongly positive impression. \u201cBack in my day, we weren\u2019t taught presentation skills \u2014 but these students made eye contact, stood tall, and structured their talks logically. This is a great generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He found value in every topic but especially appreciated how thoroughly the students had worked through their material. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t catch them off guard. Even under tough questioning, they knew exactly what they were doing \u2014 that\u2019s the sign of real depth.\u201d<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s fast-changing automotive world, engineers must adapt quickly. \u201cTrends shift daily \u2014 internal combustion engines are even back in focus. You have to keep up.\u201d According to Sik, three things are essential: technical knowledge, adaptability, and language proficiency.<\/p>\n

His advice to future candidates: \u201cRecognize your strengths and learn to present them well. Self-marketing is vital. If you know what you know \u2014 and can show it \u2014 you\u2019ll be competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sees the university\u2013industry relationship as strong: \u201cThere\u2019s always room to grow, but the fact that I could be here and gain insight shows we\u2019re moving in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI truly enjoyed it,\u201d said \u00c1d\u00e1m Ailer, a graduating student who was pleased with the reception of his presentation. \u201cI got questions I was ready for \u2014 and answering them felt good.\u201d<\/p>\n

What made the experience special for him was the presence of industry professionals on the board. \u201cThese are experts who deal with such challenges daily. Their questions were precise and realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

He received significant help in preparing his thesis and presentation from both his university advisor (Dr. J\u00f3zsef Hlinka) and his industry mentor. \u201cThey supported me with content, language, visuals \u2014 it was a great collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n

He offered specific advice for future candidates: \u201cDevelop your thesis thoroughly, and then condense that deep knowledge into a presentation with clear visuals and diagrams. And practice \u2014 because this isn\u2019t an everyday situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for his future? He hopes to stay in the field. \u201cI\u2019m currently a trainee at Continental. If an opportunity opens up, I\u2019d be happy to stay. Things are still in motion, but the direction is clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his years at BME: \u201cThere were tough semesters, but the final phase was very well-structured and enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final examination not only showcased student performance but also reflected the quality of education, the strength of industry relations, and the trust placed in the next generation of engineers. According to industry experts, the BME Department of Automotive Technologies is on the right path \u2014 and its students truly know what they\u2019re doing.
