This infrastructure marks a major milestone in the evolution of future road transportation\u2014not only as a flagship project for intelligent driver support but also as an ideal testing environment for automotive developments related to autonomous driving functions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"1212\">As part of the <em data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"746\">Eureka Central System<\/em> project\u2014carried out through a collaboration between <em data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"813\">Magyar K\u00f6z\u00fat<\/em> (Hungarian Public Road Non-Profit Ltd.) and the <em data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"917\">Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME)<\/em>\u2014engineers installed 39 different sensors along an 800-meter section of the Buda\u00f6rs stretch of the M1-M7 motorway. These sensors monitor vehicle movement in real time on both sides of the road and continuously transmit the collected data to a supercomputer located at the operator\u2019s data center.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1700\">Experts from BME\u2019s <em data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1272\">Department of Automotive Technologies<\/em> calibrated the deployed instruments (including radar units, laser-based sensors \/LIDAR\/, thermal imaging devices, and optical cameras with varying fields of view), and developed as well as trained AI-based models. As a result of these activities, the system is now capable of generating a complete digital replica of the monitored road section. This \u201c<strong data-start=\"1624\" data-end=\"1640\">digital twin<\/strong>\u201d represents all physical objects and vehicles in real time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='avia-video av-mdreo729-14c3febf901d027c6645d1e9fe6c79bd avia-video-16-9 av-html5-fullscreen-btn av-no-preview-image avia-video-load-always avia-video-html5'  itemprop=\"video\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\"  data-original_url='https:\/\/auto.bme.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/M1M7_digitalis_iker-1.mp4'><video class='avia_video'  autoplay playsinline loop preload=\"metadata\" muted controls id='player_8610_1091798853_384661089'><source src='https:\/\/auto.bme.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/M1M7_digitalis_iker-1.mp4' type='video\/mp4' \/><\/video><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-mdret4tm-368b024afb8d83035c46e480a23617c2 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p data-start=\"1702\" data-end=\"2128\">The digital twin is also able to provide road users with information that their own onboard sensors may not detect\u2014either due to limitations in sensor placement or technical capability. This means road users can receive accurate insights into distant or obstructed events, improving predictability and safety, and reducing reaction times. Ultimately, this could lead to a significant reduction in the number of road accidents.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2886\">\n<p data-start=\"2132\" data-end=\"2886\">\u201cAt the same time, the digital twin provides an ideal platform for testing driver-assistance and autonomous driving systems,\u201d explains <strong data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2287\">Dr. Andr\u00e1s R\u00f6vid<\/strong>, head of BME\u2019s environmental perception research group and technical leader of the Eureka project. \u201cThese tests can be conducted across a wide range of real-life scenarios\u2014within a safe virtual environment\u2014significantly accelerating development timelines. Our group is actively engaged in several such developments within the framework of the <em data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2675\">National Laboratory for Autonomous Systems<\/em>, and we expect this smart motorway section\u2014pioneering in Europe\u2014to attract leading international automotive research projects. This will further strengthen Hungary\u2019s position in mobility technology innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"3722\">The smart motorway section will be expanded from 800 to 1,500 meters within the next few months, offering an even broader testing ground. The valuable experience gained here will support the rollout of intelligent traffic control systems on a larger scale, forming the foundation of future transportation. One of the main goals of this development is to <strong data-start=\"3242\" data-end=\"3282\">drastically reduce traffic accidents<\/strong>, which, in addition to saving human lives, would offer substantial economic benefits: each hour of traffic stoppage due to an accident currently causes an average financial loss of 50\u201360 million HUF.
