Krisztián BÁN Ph.D.
Dr. Krisztián Bán is an Associate Professor at the Department of Automotive Technologies at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and Head of the Laser and Vehicle Manufacturing Research Group. His research focuses on the microstructural and mechanical behavior of advanced metallic alloys, as well as the materials science aspects of additive manufacturing technologies. His work contributes to improving the reliability of advanced manufacturing processes, reducing residual stresses, and developing high-performance metallic components for engineering applications.
Education and Professional Background
Dr. Krisztián Bán obtained his MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Vehicle Manufacturing and Repair from the Faculty of Transportation Engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2003. Prior to this, he earned a qualification in Quality Management System Development from TÜV Rheinland Academy in 2002. He received his PhD from BME in 2009.
Since 2019, he has been the Head of the Laser and Vehicle Manufacturing Research Group at the Department of Automotive Technologies.
His early research focused on the structure, soft magnetic properties, and laser processing of amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys. His current research investigates the effects of additive manufacturing technologies—particularly Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam/Melting (PBF-LB/M)—on microstructure, mechanical properties, and the development of residual stresses in metallic materials.
Professional Experience and Collaborations
During his doctoral studies, Dr. Bán participated in several national and international research collaborations. Within the framework of the OTKA, VEGA, APVT, and Cex-NANOSMART research programs, he worked as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Experimental Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he gained extensive experience in materials science and the investigation of metastable alloys.
He contributed to multiple research projects funded by the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA), focusing on structural transformations, magnetic properties, and glass transition phenomena in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys.
As both researcher and professional project leader, he has been actively involved in numerous industrial R&D projects at BME.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with several leading industrial partners, including Roto Elzett Certa Ltd., MÁV Hungarian State Railways, BKV Budapest Transport Company, Robert Bosch, BorgWarner Hungary, Morgan Advanced Materials, Audi Hungaria, and CBMM Technology Suisse SA.
Under his professional leadership, the Department’s Additive Manufacturing Laboratory was established within the framework of the National Competitiveness and Excellence Program (NVKP). Since its establishment, the laboratory has served as a key research infrastructure supporting numerous national and international research and development projects.
Teaching Activities
As a university lecturer, Dr. Bán is committed to educating engineers who not only possess a solid technical foundation but are also capable of critical thinking, exploring the underlying principles of engineering challenges, and continuously re-evaluating their knowledge in light of new scientific and technological developments.
He actively contributes to the Department’s teaching activities and supervises undergraduate and graduate student research projects. His students have achieved outstanding results at Faculty Scientific Students’ Association Conferences (TDK), with several qualifying for the National Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (OTDK). In recognition of his excellence in student supervision, he received the Pro Progressio Foundation’s TDK Supervisor Scholarship in 2012.
Scientific Community Activities
Dr. Bán regularly serves as a reviewer for international scientific journals in the fields of materials science, laser manufacturing technologies, and additive manufacturing. He has also been an active member of the organizing and scientific committees of the International Colloquium of Advanced Manufacturing and Repair Technologies in the Vehicle Industry conference series.
